Monaco signs Council of Europe convention on security, safety and services at sporting events

On 3 July 2016, H.E. Mr Claude Cottalorda, Monaco’s Ambassador to France, signed, on behalf of the Prince’s Government, the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events.

Promoted by the Council of Europe, the Convention seeks to combat violence, public order offences and other types of unrest recently associated with football. The challenge for the Council of Europe is to disseminate the core values of international cooperation, within and by sport, while preventing and combating behaviours (violence, doping, match fixing etc.) which threaten the integrity of football, other sports and society.

The signing ceremony took place at the Stade de France, in the presence of Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Michael Van Praag, member of the Executive Committee and Vice President ofUEFA  , and Thierry Braillard, French Secretary of State for Sport.

The Convention was signed by 14 nations.*

After the ceremony, representatives from the signatory states were invited to attend the Euro 2016 quarter final match between France and Iceland.

* France was the first signatory, followed by Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Lithuania, Moldova, the Principality of Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland and Ukraine.
